Rice Shrugs Off Ballon d’Or Buzz as Arteta Praises Arsenal Star’s Rapid Rise

Declan Rice is not getting carried away by growing talk of individual awards, even as his performances continue to put him among football’s elite.

The Arsenal midfielder has emerged as an early contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or after a standout season in both the Premier League and the Champions League. Across UK betting markets, Rice is currently listed as the fifth favourite for the award, trailing only Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.

Despite the attention, Rice remains grounded.

“I’m just Dec from Kingston,” he said with a smile in an interview with Sky Sports, referencing his hometown in Surrey.

Staying Grounded Amid Elite Company

Rice admitted the recognition is flattering, but he sees it more as proof that his work is paying off rather than a reason to change his mindset.

“These are the right conversations to be in,” he said. “Arsenal fans are really appreciating what I’m doing right now, and it was the same with West Ham before.

“When people compare you with the best players in the world, it’s a good feeling. It means you’re performing at a high level, and that’s where you want to be.”

Arteta’s Backing After Bournemouth Heroics

Rice’s comments came shortly after another decisive display in red. The 25-year-old scored twice in the second half as Arsenal overturned a deficit to beat Bournemouth 3-2, underlining his growing influence in big moments.

The brace was a personal milestone. It marked the first time Rice has scored twice in a Premier League match, coming in his 296th appearance in the competition.

What made the performance more impressive was his recent fitness scare. Rice had missed Arsenal’s win over Aston Villa just days earlier due to a knee issue but returned in style, opening the scoring nine minutes after the break before adding a second goal later in the match.

“One of the Best in the World”

Manager Mikel Arteta did not hesitate when asked where Rice ranks among midfielders globally.

“For me, yes,” Arteta said when questioned on whether Rice is already among the best in his position.

“Declan keeps adding new elements to his game and to his role in the team. I don’t see a ceiling for him. He still has areas he can improve, and he’s desperate to keep getting better.”
